WARM 01: A Soft Landing for the Sun

WARM 01 is inspired by Taiwan’s sun-shooting legend, transforming an once-overwhelming sun into a gentle, human-scale glow. As the light softens and the wax slowly melts, the lamp becomes a quiet reminder that true warmth lies not in excess, but in balance.

WARM 01 is the first product of HALO, and it quickly went viral online and created a huge success for the brand. The designer, Yun-Huai Yao, has established HALO in 2024. During the pandemic, Yao has observed that the lifestyle has shift toward better quality of residential environment since people tend to spend more time at home.

WARM 01, which could be seen as the representation of HALO's core value, has shown how simple structure can embody aesthetics, vibe, and the culture.

Derived from the landmark in Chiayi, Taiwan, Sun-Shooting Tower (also known as Chiayi Tower), Yao was inspired by this building he kept visiting since he was little and transformed it into the conceptual structure of WARM 01. The site of the Sun-Shooting Tower was once an altar of the Pingpu indigenous people of Taiwan. Therefore, it not only serves as an observation deck, but also holds shared memories tied to the mythology of the plains indigenous peoples.

Legend has it that in ancient times, there were two suns alternated in the sky, leaving the world without day or night. One of these suns was far larger than any seen today. Consequently, the weather became unbearably hot, causing plants to wither and die. Rivers dried up, crops failed to grow, and the people suffered.
The people of the tribe figured out that unless one sun was shot down, their descendants would never know peace and prosperity, and the tribe itself would face extinction. Three brave warriors volunteered to undertake the mission. Because the way to the sun was so far, the three men each carried an infant on their backs. With blessings from the tribe, they started their journey. Along the way, they planted the oranges they ate, hoping they would become the provisions for their return.
Day after day, the once-mighty warriors were now frail and aged; the infants they carried had grown into adults and inherited their mission. Finally, the three young warriors reached the location. After decades of long journey, they couldn't help but shoot without a thought. The blood of the sun was so hot that one of the warriors was killed by the heat. Although, rest of them were also burned, they still made it back home. On their way home, they saw the orange trees planted by the previous generation had grown tall and were laden with fruit.
By the time they returned to the tribe, both of them had become elderly men. Yet from that day forward, the sky no longer held two suns – this was how day and night started. The moon we see in the night sky today is that very sun, shot down in the ancient battle.

This story is more than a myth. Viewed through a broader human philosophical lens, this sun-shooting myth expresses an early form of sustainability ethics. The world falls into crisis not because of evil, but because natural forces lose balance. Our role as humans isn't to conquer nature, but to restore equilibrium. The warriors knew that completing the mission within a single lifetime wasn't possible. Yet, they still set out, even planting orange trees along the path they may never walk again. This action reflects the responsibility of acting for the future, recognizing that it's never about immediate results, but about faith that certain efforts will take root, thriving into possibilities for future generations.

Echoing the myth, WARM 01 has transformed the sun that was once overwhelmingly powerful into the light source and the sphere shade. WARM 01 is therefore not merely an object of illumination, but a legend translated into form. As light glows and wax melts gently, we seem to witness the fallen sun descending from the sky into the human world, becoming a quiet, approachable glow, a light we can live with and understand.

With a clean and crisp design, WARM 01 takes away all the complexity, leaving the purity to speak. The warm amber light reflected from the metal material softened the rigid feeling, making the candle warmer itself an intertwining of grace and resilience.
